The Rewinder is a 2D puzzle adventure game inspired by traditional Chinese folklore. The game uses pixel art to mimic the aesthetics of Chinese ink paintings. Players will get to meet mythological figures such as the Spirit Wardens, the Ox-head and Horse-face Guardians of the Beyond, and the Tudi Gong (Keeper of the Land). The player takes on the role of Yun, a “rewinder” who has the ability to enter people’s memories and influence their actions. By utilizing “senses” and swaying others’ “intentions”, he can change history. At the request of the Spirit Wardens, Yun goes to a small village to investigate why a spirit couldn’t be reincarnated. The once thriving village has been deserted and filled with resentful spirits, leaving one woman alone in the teahouse. Who’s she waiting for? Where did all the other villagers go? What really happened seven years ago? This is a fantastic chinese puzzle story with excellent story, interesting game play, great music and on top of all that: an almost perfect translation!
I have to emphasize the translation here because I think this story is a great introduction point to anyone who is interested in Chinese mythology/deities/cultural settings, as this game is only scratching the surface of a complicate mythology that exists over thousands of years, however, it does the explanation exceedingly well, introducing the characters and the mythology settings in a very gradual and intriguing way. You will meet the character, talk to the them and wonder, who the f are these guys that look so weird, then you can proceed to read the log of the character. The log, unlike some other games that gives you almost an bibliography to read, this game only provides maybe 2 paragraph simplified explanation of the mythology origin, to the extent that’s interesting, intelligible but also short so it doesn’t become a chore to read. Imagine playing black myth wukong years later, but have no clue what everything is about, this game touches those.

Learning and entertaining at the same time, which is the category of games I love the most. Great work to the localization team! The Rewinder is a true point-and-click delight. Rich cultural connections in the narrative and art build a fantastic game world with fun puzzles to engage the mind for a pleasurable immersive adventure. Although the main character is not a detective, there is a mystery to be solved, and fans of paranormal investigations such as the Blackwell universe will find this game along the same vein. Centuries ago, the Four Keepers granted a select few the ability of Rewind, entering and influencing memories to alter the timeline as needed to maintain the Reincarnation Cycle. In this universe deeply rooted in Chinese mythology and folklore, Yun is the last of the Rewinders.
