I always knew I was an easy sucker for video games, but nothing explains what this game did to me. From the moment you hit “play,” the visuals take you on a trippy journey that, along with the music, sound effects, and the coach’s deep and velvety voice, makes you forget you’re getting pummeled, and all you want to do is keep playing to continue on that amazing world. Thunder Ray is just right – perfect, spot-on, and it’s clear that the studio that made it put not only a lot of love but extreme attention to detail and the gaming experience, because all you want to do is play for hours on end as if you were 10 years old again and your mom had prepared a snack with cookies and chocolate milk waiting for you. It only took about an hour for me to get all achievements but it was still worth it. Some of the punches really tripped me up as they REALLY felt like ones you’re supposed to dodge INTO and not away from, but maybe I’ve fought Don Flamenco and Great Tiger too many times.

The journey is linear as is its plot. Its story takes place in various sceneries. It gives a notion of being a one-way trip. Though each of them are unbalanced, making some well-crafted with good illumination while others stress repetitiveness or artistic poverty. I’m liberated to exhale, but in return I forgo the feeling of horror in the dark with eerie monsters. Otherwise, something taken my eye it’s the presence of biomachines. Their art is astonishing with green tones and organically symmetrical architecture. On the contrary, it demanded to be explained narratively. Sometimes it fails to do so by abandoning them as forgotten narrative resources and giving priority to the protagonist. Snow, concluded locations, alien architecture, sidereal space, they’re few elements then they needed to be well performed. The story is revealed gradually, but sometimes it’s suddenly exposed through an image or a film as a reminiscence. Perhaps the game looks more like an interactive movie with a lot of action. All this is comprehended with music.
