Alan Bradley has finally perfected the technology to digitize people, which allows humans to enter the internal world of a computer. His program, “Ma3a,” has AI sophisticated enough to store the entire gene code of a person and the mathematical equations necessary to transfer people back and forth between the physical and digital world. However, fCon — Future Control Industries — has learned of Alan’s research and is moving to take over the company. When Alan disappears mysteriously, finding him is up to Jet, his son. Jet uses his father’s technology to enter the computer world and, while investigating his father’s disappearance, discovers a sinister plot. Four “primitive” weapons — disk, rod, ball, and mesh — are encountered in the computer world, though the disk is the only weapon that can be used both offensively and defensively. Jet will also ride light-cycles, both the classic cycle from the 1982 film and a new “experimental” update from designer Syd Mead (also responsible for the original light-cycle design).
If you look at the negative reviews for this game, you’ll find in the majority of cases it’s not because they didn’t like the game. It’s because they couldn’t get it to work. Giving a negative review for that reason is fine, and Disney should definitely fix the issue. It doesn’t happen for everyone. But if it does, there’s a community guide started by schmatzler that can help, with a simple fix. It also advises on how to play the game in widescreen, and even get the online multiplayer working again; both via the Killer App Mod. The environments in the game expertly balance the fine line between paying homage to the original film’s neon glow aesthetics, while at the same time updating them and giving the game levels a more sophisticated look. The player’s weapons are imaginative analogues to the standard FPS shotgun, machine gun, sniper rifle, grenade launcher, etc. But it’s the iconic identity disc that is the most fun to use: being able to both attack, and defend (block) opponents’ discs.
TRON 2.0 Pre-Installed:
Monolith Productions managed to translate the versatility and precise control seen from the disc in the film, to this game. Continuous FPS action is occasionally broken up with Light Cycle race sections, which again almost perfectly emulate what was seen in the original TRON. The AI can be a bit frustrating to play against, because of their insanely fast responses to the player. But, eventually you will learn how to deal with them, and they can be defeated relatively easily. If you find the races too frustrating, they can be skipped by saying “No” when the game asks if you want to retry. There is no score penalty for doing this, and you won’t miss anything (cutscenes or rewards) if you skip races. The game is incredibly creative in its design, does a great job honoring the original film, and has such great atmosphere. You’ll never play a game quite like this. I cannot recommend it enough.
