UFO: Extraterrestrials PLATINUM is a turn based sci-fi strategy which includes number of changes and improvements giving a player a new look on the classic game: new alien species, heavy weapon platforms, heavy mortar fire, crash site bombing, unique items, globe UFO swarms, and configurability. The writers had no ambition of updating the dialogues and jokes. If you are very PC, turn off the volume. You have misogyny, racism, nationalism, sexism – all the isms really. One particular dialogue between Wolf and Fox will leave you traumatized for life. Ironically, this problem makes it feel like your mercs are real people and I cared about them more than I ever could for any soldier in xcom for example. I used to enjoy swapping them completely as it gave my own variety of adapting different strategies in each game but as there is only ever 3 commanders it feels like real lack of depth and it gets very samey.
But the major issue that stops me from playing, people quit as soon as they start to lose after just a few minutes. As result, all the fights in the game provide a moderate challenge, without being too easy or particularly hard. You can explore the world freely without worrying about running into enemies above your capabilities. In region-locked mode enemy groups have static level and size set for every region. You’ll have to explore the regions in a specific order or risk running into enemies well above your level. You can find actually hard fights by going to the places you’re not supposed to be going yet, but on average fights are quite a bit easier than in adaptive mode. I feel like adaptive mode provides a better overall experience, but t’s more of a matter of personal preference.

I did find it difficult at the beginning but that was because I was making mistakes by not having a game plan. That wasn’t helped by the fact that the tutorial in the game is poor. In fact it doesn’t really exist. So I hope the developers improve this. Please add a tutorial and in-game tips. I felt that the game did a great job of remaining engaging and having genuinely new challenges for each campus. The early game was always a lot of fun, trying to get your campus in working order, with so many things to think about and plan around. It’s really like a game of The Sims where you have 100 sims at once. It was fun before to buy commanders with game points made in multiplayer matches too.
