Umigari (written in Japanese as 海狩り) literally means “sea hunting” or “ocean gathering.” It refers to the activity of collecting seafood directly from the ocean, typically along the shore, reefs, or shallow waters. Common Forms of Umigari: Tidepool foraging / Rockpooling Searching for shellfish, crabs, seaweed, and other marine life in tidal zones when the tide is low. Spearfishing / Freediving for seafood Using a spear or hands to catch fish, octopus, abalone, sea urchins, etc., while diving. Beachcombing for edible marine resources Gathering clams, mussels, or oysters from sandy or muddy shores. Traditional fishing by hand or simple tools Sometimes includes using nets, traps, or hooks in coastal waters.
