The effect seems like a much sunnier interpretation of the style evoked in The Last Night. a dead-ended cyberpunk game first announced back in 2017, before eventually being buried in controversy and delays. Expect multifaceted scrolling backgrounds, zoomed-in pixel scaling for dramatic camera angles, and fine attention to lighting and sound. There’s a special ingredient in the Until Then recipe which relates to Polychroma’s previous work: text messaging. for instance, when Mark is waiting for his stop on the train or tussling with an unrequited class crush during a bout of insomnia.
There’s waiting for other characters to type their messages out, commenting or leaving likes on their pseudo-Facebook posts (which can potentially be noticed and referred to in the story), and fretfully hopping between DM group threads. Or, more specifically, the incorporation of a dedicated smartphone storytelling engine with the adventure and exploration components of the wider game. This means that when players control Mark they often enter circumstances where he is fiddling with his smartphone, and can navigate through different group texts, private messages, and social media platforms, with some level of interactivity therein. Until Then has chosen an immediately attractive and emotive art style, a format which blends animated 2D pixel art with dynamic camera angles and 3D backgrounds and architecture. Following high schooler Mark as he completes mundane tasks like homework, piano lessons, and constantly scrolling social media while also balancing relationships with friends and family, Until Then’s world will pull you in immediately and you won’t want to leave. Perhaps the most striking thing about Until Then is its visuals.

We’re not sure we’ve ever seen a pixelated art style breathe so much life. Walking left to right along a street in control of Mark, it really feels like a living, bustling city. Carefully chosen sound effects add to that, too, with the sounds of crowds, traffic and chatter seeping through your speakers as you move around. Backdrops are absolutely gorgeous and teeming with detail. Streets are packed with vendors, people, dogs and other animals, and walls are often littered with posters and graffiti, making this feel like a lived-in world. The characters perhaps steal the show, however: their faces are incredibly expressive and despite having no audible voices. A fateful meeting sets off a chain reaction. Uncover the truth with Mark and his friends in this narrative adventure and race to unravel the mystery.” the artwork and the music are amazing, the mini games are really engaging and are balanced which don’t stress you out too much, and the interactivity of your phone and the things around you really made it like you are in high school. However, the most important part was the story, and it was beautiful.
