At first glance, it may appear to be just another walking simulator, but it doesn’t take long before you realize there’s something special here. This climb is well worth taking on, and who knows? It may just tug at your heartstrings, too. You play as a frog tasked with planting radio towers on mountains to benefit the inhabitants of Valley Peaks. Compared to your mundane office job, this is an exciting assignment. Who could say no to a trip where you explore the countryside and climb mountains? As you progress, you learn more about your job, your employer, and your father, who helped develop the radio towers. The developers have even snuck in a sweet coming-of-age tale where the protagonist learns who they truly are and what they really want in life. You can also chat with various frog NPCs to learn about them and the area. There are lots of feel-good vibes to discover. The game starts with a brief tutorial on the controls. Playing from a first-person perspective, you use the trigger buttons on the controller to shoot out each of your froggy arms and attach them to special rocks on a mountain. Moving the arms feels smooth and comfortable, and the game does a great job of easing you into the experience.
Before long, you’ll need to start taking leaps of faith, including jumping up and hoping your arms will reach the next surface away from the safety of your other arm. If things don’t go to plan and you fall, don’t panic—you’re a frog, so you always land on your feet and take no damage. But you do have to start the climb again. After planting your first radio tower, you are then given free rein to explore Valley Peaks. The main objective is to plant 11 radio towers on various mountains of different difficulty levels. Difficulty is marked with a star system, so you can build yourself up to the bigger challenges or tackle them in any order you fancy. Easier mountains are fairly casual, with simple, easy-to-access rock surfaces. Soon, you are introduced to rocks that will fall if you dilly-dally too long, spikes that will knock you back (don’t worry, there’s no death in Valley Peaks), and moving platforms. Most mountains usually have a point where you can rest on a safe surface.

The feeling I got playing this game is that the developers want you to enjoy the process of climbing, even if it means a few stumbles along the way. It’s a bit like life, I guess. An interesting feature of each mountain is that each one has three points of entry. If you touch specific colour-coded markers in the correct number order, you collect a stamp. Collect three stamps, and you can exchange them for an upgrade at the vendor. You can also collect mushrooms and exchange them for stamp cards. To start, you unlock a special watch to slow down time and make some of the risky jumps. Over time, you unlock gliders to fly around the area, drones to scope out the mountain, and a handy teleporting device to make falls to the bottom less infuriating. Three items can be equipped at once and run off an additional stamina meter, which only regenerates on a flat surface. Graphically, Valley Peaks has a calming pastel feel to its art design. Valley Peaks is a wonderful area to explore, with rich vegetation and various NPCs to chat with. Some you’ll find in obscure places the more you explore.
