It’s another thing entirely to have a game entirely devoted to your experience of straddling two worlds. To see someone who looks like you and has the same feelings, fears and hangups and it to be on a different side of that battle….it’s evocative and heart-wrenching.I had such high hopes for this game, played the demo which gave me an excellent idea of what to expect, and was practically counting down the hours to the full release last night Australian time. And man, it did not disappoint at all. If anything, it was far more emotional and nuanced than I expected. I got so choked up at several points, the intergenerational perspectives were so thoughtful and deep, and the insights of being caught between two cultures were spot on.

What I really admired was the careful balance of story and gameplay. I don’t like too much story in my games, I want to be actually doing something. So even though there was probably a little more story in this than I usually tolerate, it was still told well enough that I wanted to know that stuff and was still delighted when it came time to make a thing. I loved the texture of the art style and that the controls were still smooth enough that I could play this without any controllers or keys, just the touchpad on my laptop.
