In a future not too far away, one Artificial Intelligence has prevailed over all other AIs and their governments. Society has migrated to a permanently integrated reality connected to a single neural network that continuously optimizes people’s experiences by processing personal data. Nathan, an outsider still refusing to comply with the new system, makes a living off the grid as a smuggler of modded hardware and cracked software. Geared with his custom headset, he is among the few that can still switch AVR off and see reality for what truly is. He shares an apartment in the city with his girlfriend Jay, a talented AVR graffiti writer whose drones have been bit-spraying techno-color all over the augmented space in the city. Waking up one morning, Nathan discovers that Jay disappeared overnight, but not before leaving a cryptic message on their bathroom mirror. Having accidentally broken his custom headset, Nathan is now disconnected and determined to find out what happened to Jay, but he soon finds himself tangled up in an unexpected journey involving Jay’s hacker group and a guild of AVR technomancers.
Travelling around the world, he’ll have to deal with hardware graveyards, digital archeology, tribes of cryptoshamans, and virtual reality debauchery. But some of the puzzles in the game are absolutely absurd.. Yes, they make “logical sense” after you find an answer elsewhere, but they require a really skewed version of logic that is outside reality and common sense.. and there’s enough of these puzzles that it really slows down the game, not to mention there’s spots where you’re forced to run back and forth through transitional areas for no other reason than to advance the puzzle solving by one unit. My playtime to completion was about 11 hours, but I would say of those 11 hours, at least 3 of them total was angrily banging my head against a wall trying to solve a puzzle only to find out that the solution was something ridiculously obscure. There’s also an entire section that could be entirely omitted from the game, save you about an hour and a half, and you would lose nothing other than some cool pixel art.
VirtuaVerse Free Steam Pre-Installed:
Again, all the pieces of the game are fantastic, but the overall gameplay is just more frustrating than enjoyable in a lot of places (and I know this is a throwback to the P&C games of yesteryear that are just like that), but this could have been a shorter, more enjoyable game if there wasn’t so many back and forth and gotcha puzzles, and it just relaxed and told the story it wants to tell. Very stable game (take this with the caveat that it took me a while to play thru this due to school/side projects/global pandemic/oncoming apocalypse. There were some issues apparently when it first came out but the developer was pretty rapid in how they addressed them and I do not have any major complaints about its stability. Alt-tabing out caused no crashing and there was no setup nonsense or resolution headaches. This game evoked several of my favorite movies and games in an indirect way.
