About The Game
Forget everything you know about first-person shooters: Void Bastards asks you to take charge, not just point your gun and fire. Your task is to lead the rag-tag Void Bastards out of the Sargasso Nebula. You make the decisions: where to go, what to do and who to fight. And then you must carry out that strategy in the face of strange and terrible enemies. On board derelict spaceships you’ll plan your mission, taking note of the ship layout, what hazards and enemies you might encounter and what terminals and other ship systems you can use to your advantage.. Move carefully through the dangerous ships, searching for supplies and manipulating control systems. React to what you find – will you detour to the generator to bring the power back online or will you fight your way into the security module to disable the ship’s defenses? Choose carefully when to fight, when to run and when just to be a bastard.
Navigate your tiny escape pod through the vast nebula. Flee from void whales and pirates, and politely avoid the hungry hermits. All the while you must keep scavenging for the food, fuel, and other resources that keep you alive. Void Bastards features a 12-15 hour campaign that you can complete with an endless supply of prisoners, each with their own unique traits. When one dies, another steps forward to carry on the fight. Don’t worry though, as any crafting progress you’ve made is retained from one to another. bit more story, or at least an explanation of the factions and certain UI elements. Okay, so, there are a half dozen factions’ ships floating around. There’s a luxury cruise ship full of food. There’s a salary-man barge full of cubicles. There’s a prison transport. There’s a medical ship. Each has a unique set of gear that you’d find on them. For instance, you really only find health on medical ships. There are essentially no health pick-ups in the game. You gain back some health between ships.
They all share the same pool of enemies, though. There’s a small handful, and each has a weakness to certain weapons. Again, however, in the early parts of the game, you might not have the right weapon, might not have discovered the right weapon, or you might not have enough ammo. You have to scavenge all your ammo, and early in the game this starts getting problematic, when you’ve only got one gun and no ammo for it. There is no melee option. All you can do is RUN!! Or, you could die. You’ll get a small starter kit when you respawn. However, you’ll also have a whole new set of perks and debuffs, too. In the end, I really enjoyed the casualness of the game. You can easily drop in, clear up one or two ships, then log out for the night. Each ship is usually an under-20 minute adventure. You quickly run out of enemies (and the pallette-swaps start happening), you quickly get the sense of how different ships are assembled. It starts becoming almost rote. But at the same time, you’re finally filling out your war-chest full of more and more weapons, you’re getting to understand the enemies and ships.
