Fighting Games have spent the past decade or two trying to find a way to lower the execution barrier to let people approach it, engage with it, learn it, and start the journey to mastering it without the exceedingly high invest of time and energy the existing community has already poured into it for years to grasp fundamental concepts and inputs. Simplified input options, extensive tutorials and training modes, comeback mechanics, and autocombos are just a few attempts towards that goal, each bringing varying levels of success, and some arguably introducing detrimental effects to the core game experience. The “Single Player” one part practice room, one part combo lobby, and one part cool fight choreographer. You have full control of both characters (There’s no AI currently, nor do I know if one is planned) and chose their every action. This might sound dull at a glance, but for the inclined, it quickly blossoms into an incredibly deep and fun game in it’s own right. With full control, you can see and understand every minor element of how the game’s combat system works and interacts with itself. From there, you can push the boundaries of each character and character matchup to see what’s possible, what’s most reliable, or just what looks the coolest. At the end, all of that work plays back in real time to make a truly unique visual spectacle that you can easily save the replays of for future use.

Being able to experience all the game has to offer in such a controlled environment, being able to easily see how every action can potentially play out, and seeing how far you can push (or escape) your combos, will teach you it’s ins and outs with a fraction of the time any other fighting game would generally ask of you to develop the same level of system competency under the duress of even casual play, all without giving up any complexity or depth to it’s mechanics. From there, you can carry your experience online and test your newfound knowledge against other players. Instead of execution, you’re now almost entirely focused on testing your knowledge of the system and your ability to read your opponent, which is the real heart of fighting games.
