Touhou Koumakyou: New Classic – the Embodiment of Scarlet Devil is a vertically scrolling bullet hell shooter set in Gensokyou, a hidden land where humans, spirits and youkai live side by side. A thick scarlet haze has settled over the region, dimming the sun and unsettling everyone who lives there. Two of its residents decide to find the source: Reimu Hakurei, the shrine maiden of the Hakurei Shrine, and Marisa Kirisame, a magician who lives in the Forest of Magic. Their search leads them to a Western style mansion that has materialized inside the mist, and to the mistress waiting within. The core idea is easy to describe and hard to execute: enemies flood the screen with dense, geometric curtains of glowing projectiles, and survival depends on threading a tiny hitbox through the gaps between them. This version rebuilds the 2002 original with artwork redrawn at high resolution and every track rearranged by its original composer, ZUN.

Players choose one of the two heroines and then a shot type, and that second choice shapes the entire run. Some loadouts fire homing shots that track targets across the screen, while others concentrate damage into a narrow forward stream that rewards aggressive positioning. Reimu leans on mobility and wide coverage, Marisa on raw firepower. A focus mode slows movement to a crawl for precise weaving through tight patterns. A limited stock of bombs clears the screen in an emergency, and the bomb type is also picked at the character select screen, so the same stage can be handled in several different ways. Lives are finite in the standard game, and losing the last one ends the attempt, which turns every stage and every boss into a test of pattern reading and memory. A new mode removes that pressure by granting unlimited lives, letting newcomers reach and study the later stages without constant restarts. Gamepad buttons can be remapped through the key configuration in the options menu. The result is a faithful revival of a genre landmark, sharper looking and far easier to approach, without softening the challenge that made it famous.
