About The Game
Is this game a masterpiece? I’d say yes, from the gorgous visual presentation, great voice acting, fascinating real-life/fictional game world to the touching story about topics rarely touched in bigger computer games, this is a great adventure.
In a world full of automatons (precision mechanic machines), in a ficitional (German) town in the year 1937, Dana, a young Jewish woman from the Music Academy performs at a public concert. Dark clouds can already be seen regarding the future political developments, while Dana still dreams of going to Paris for a higher (musical) education. In a parallel story, Kate Walker freezes in a Russian prison in the year 2004, forced to work in a salt mine in Siberia, when she hears of the recent death of her mother in New York. You will switch between those stories, and soon find out how they are connected. Both stories are rather dark – don’t consider playing if you look for a feel-good story. It has now been nearly 20 years since I finished Syberia (and a bit later Syberia 2), and this game gives me the same vibes. A melancholic story, in a somehow recognizable and yet strange world, with not too difficult puzzles and an emotional story that leads through a number of different locations. It is a fantasy story, but this time even more inspired by real world history than the first games.
The world with its automatons is based on the genius work of French author Benoit Sokal, who sadly passed away in 2021. He already designed this world for the earlier Syberia games, but it has never been brought to life in such detail and such great visual quality. It looks more like a movie where you control the main actor(s). Fortunately it is in third-perspective, so you always have a good view of your sourroundings (and I don’t get motion-sick).
Marvellous And Poetic Open World:
The game is controlled completely with the mouse or gamepad. Move around, click on hotspots (there are a lot), talk to people, move the mouse in the right direction to operate things. To-do lists show your current goals to advance the story, additional information can be found if you explore darker corners. 3440×1440 works, but with black borders on the sides. All characters are fully voiced, but the texts you can find to read are not. The game is saved automatically, cloud saves are supported.
Those who played the Prologue will be happy to know the optimization went up by a lot. Loading times, and overall stability improved considerably, and if that was the reason for the delay, it was for the best. The frame rate is very consistent, even in Ultra Settings.
Unfortunately, there aren’t very visual options, but you can tweak Shadows and Anti-Aliasing to control performance. Chromatic Aberration is present, and I for one did not manage to remove it. Not a good thing, especially in 2022.
Syberia The World Before free download does everything right to captivate players in a a enjoyable adventure, one where we rejoice for having Kate Walker back, fused in a timeline as a new mystery arises. A true come back in the series, and one a true fan can and will most certainly love. Well worth the price tag, for an adventure that will easily surpass the 15 hour mark.
