Beyond marking clearly the climbing routes, it makes sure there’s a challenge. You only get to see one segment of the map at a time, you’re going to have to use the compass as a compass, you’re going to have to learn your routes and use your brain. This isn’t “challenging through bad design” it’s challenging by being challenging, so by the end it feels like an accomplishment. The only criticism is that the crossbow is so dramatically over powered, that the combat switches from “oh sh~ I’m gonna die” to “Urgh let’s just check I have some bolts left”. For an example of how over powered, the knife deals about 12, absorbs stamina, and has to be crafted after a few uses, the crossbow deals about 120 and only needs bolts.
