About The Game
KLONOA is a 3D side-scrolling action game series whose first title was released by Namco in 1997. Set in a unique universe populated by a range of original characters, the game follows the hero, Klonoa, as he sets off on a journey to save the world. Commemorating the 25th anniversary of the first title in the series, we are pleased to announce the release of the KLONOA Phantasy Reverie Series, a remastered title combining both KLONOA: Door to Phantomile and KLONOA 2: Lunatea’s Veil! The world of the games and their gameplay elements remains unchanged, while the graphics have been upgraded. Adjustable difficulty settings have also been introduced to make the games more accessible to first-time players. Enjoy a nostalgic trip down memory lane playing this new and improved KLONOA.
I was happy to find out Klonoa was getting ported to modern hardware, but I also was a bit concerned. Companies sometimes port/re-release old titles to not only squeeze a little extra cash from an IP, but also to potentially see if there’s still an interest in said IP. Something like the Mega Man Legacy Collection, for example, which was made to test out the developers’ emula- uh, I mean, ‘engine,’ but pleased Capcom in terms of sales and they agreed to form a new internal team to make a new title some time later. This is also good for the consumers as well so they can experience older titles for the first time on modern hardware or have access to old favorites more conveniently (that is official, I must add). However, there are some cases, like the more recently-released Zombies Ate My Neighbors and Ghoul Patrol, where the publisher just didn’t care, and rushed a developer to put out whatever for a quick profit. Luckily, this isn’t the case for this title, but I can’t say it’s perfect either.
Just a bit of history about the series before I get into this collection, Klonoa is a 2.5D puzzle platformer developed and published by Namco in 1997 for the PS1, and Klonoa 2 was released on the PS2 in 2001. They were directed by the same individual responsible for Mighty Bomb Jack and Mr.Driller. Both titles were well-received critically (especially Klonoa 2, as it got a 91 on Metacritic), but experienced poor sales. It’s hard to pinpoint why, but I’m guessing releasing a brand new 2D mascot platformer in a time where games were becoming more edgy and focused on three dimensions didn’t help. Plus, whatever ads you’ve seen in magazines of the titles at the time were kinda cringe-worthy, and advertised it as ‘another wacky platformer.’
