Experiencing effects of a broken family, and the heartache it brings, a young child will escape reality into a dark, whimsical world created from his own memories. This sets him on his journey to uncover what truly lies within. Having suffered in reality, his past trauma turns into terrifying monsters that want to keep him in an eternal nightmare. With the help of his dream spirit, the boy will find ways to sneak past enemies, overcome intricate puzzles, embrace his fear, and uncover the truth so that he may be able to purify the monsters he has created, and finally wake up.

Graphically, Stray looks fantastic too. Whether it be neon lights reflected off puddles on the ground or something simple like your feline traversing on the rooftops, every part of this game looks fantastic. There’s a mixture of vibrant and dingy colours, whenever the script calls for it, and you’ll find yourself itching to explore the next area to see what else this game has in store for you.
In Nightmare Pre-Installed:
Stray turned out to be a masterclass in minimalist and environmental storytelling reminiscent of Valve during the Portal era. I’ll end w/ some criticism – the puzzles in Stray seem like they’re designed for 10 year olds, which is fine I guess, especially considering how creatively they are integrated into the environment, but it left me wishing for some late-game brain teasers that take longer than 30 seconds to solve. Stray is a wonderful little game. It’s not a title that pushes the genre forward, nor is it a game that’s all about the microtransactions and making a quick buck. This is classic video-game territory; a title that just wants to tell an emotional story and allow players to explore a beautiful world.
