As triple-A games these days have trended to becoming massively long, soulless and unmemorable, it is a breath of fresh air to play an indie game like Mr. Saitou that reminds you of the actual power of games as an art form.
Mr. Saitou doesn’t boast 80 hours of repetitive gameplay, what it instead contains is much more valuable – is a sincere message about navigating through life, told through a whimsical, magical, amusing story, full of quirky characters, catchy songs, and unexpected twists and turns in a pixar/miyazaki-esque adventure. I’m really happy to have experienced this game, because the themes and message will stick with me in my real life – dealing with the difficulties of life and still maintain optimism and perspective. This is art, as a game. This is a short and simple game with puzzles that aren’t very complex. There are several endearing characters and all I can say without revealing too much is that everyone needs a Widetou in their lives. The story in this game can get quite relatable, so do prepare some tissues at the side as a precaution.

The narrative was a mixture of seriousness and humor. For most of the game, the atmosphere was rather lighthearted. A great example being if you talked to any of the plants, each one would say a unique thing and I found that rather fantastic. The plot was clear and well written. Humorous and I enjoyed being able to examine all sorts of things in the environment that just added more to the flavor of the story rather than just decoration. My favorite being the “world’s deadliest cakes” book. The pacing for this game was smooth. There wasn’t really a lot of back tracking, only a few detours for solving a puzzle here or there, but otherwise it was a nice, steady pace where the player could pause to investigate the environment as they pleased before moving on to the next area. Not too slow, and not rushed. The length of the game itself is a few hours give or take your personal speed though the game.
