If you’ve played these and wonder if it’s worth the revisit: The Quality of Life improvements are excellent, more and better map markers, skill trees akin to later series entries, stunningly redrawn art assets that are in line with the original concept art. It’s the EO you know and it’s great. If you’re new! Welcome! I don’t recommend Picnic mode. It makes the game FAR to easy (but thankfully is a toggle option at any time so you can definitely abuse it for level grinding!). Etrian Odyssey comes from an old lineage of first person dungeon crawler games where death is common, and you’re expected to keep track of your position in the world with grid paper (these were originally on the DS and the map was on the bottom screen, now it’s a toggle split screen or minimap that you can do pretty easy mouse draw with).

These games are not for everyone, they are grindy, they are challenging to the point of being sometimes unfair, and the turn based combat leaves a lot for your imagination to fill in with quick particle effect animations representing attacks with static images for characters and enemies. this game is such a comfy warm blanket if you crave a game of survival and interlinking party systems. Figuring out that perfect party synergy, trusting your own map making to guide you back each time you venture deeper and deeper, all supported by excellent visual style and a bopping retro styled Yuzu Koshiro OST. There’s hundreds of hours to dive into here if its to your liking and of the three currently available on steam this is the one to get imo. Better class/party systems, interesting side quests with ocean exploration in addition to the labyrinth dungeon delves, and good replay value with branching story routes and unlockable classes.
