Experience THE DESCENT Video Game a first-person psychological horror walking sim, set in the late 19th century in the coal mining town of Rockwell Mine. Immerse yourself in the grueling atmosphere of a miners environment and their unsettling encounters deep within the treacherous mines. Assume the role of an investigator who returns to this hometown after journalism school to unveil its mysteries. Rockwell Mine has been plagued by numerous accidents, disappearances, and unexplained deaths, leaving authorities baffled. Despite countless investigations, the truth remains elusive, leading to the closure of the mine. As a player, you must navigate the perilous mine, document your investigation with a camera, solve the mysteries behind the disappearances, and overcome obstacles while evading the dangers lurking within. The Descent is a spooky horror walking sim with an eerie atmosphere and intriguing story, but it feels a little rough around the edges. As a walking sim it has a lot more on offer than most nowadays, and there are a few simple puzzles to perform along the way, and plenty of opportunity to get lost in the dark, winding passageways and tunnels.
The lack of light obviously brings about some tension and mind trickery with your imagination running riot, waiting for the next jump scare around the corner. There are many of these, varying in degrees of success, but there are also some nice spooky moments which impressed me and added to the lore which is mainly derived from newspaper cuttings scattered around the area. If you’ve played any horror games then there isn’t anything ground breaking here but it is done well for an indie horror title and it kept my interest throughout. As often happens with stories dependent on finding notes, there is the possibility of missing some, leaving a fractured account of events, and this is no exception. Towards the end of the story, I found myself picking up page four before any of the others, giving away the plot and leaving me a little frustrated that I hadn’t encountered them in order, which would have built up tension and anticipation. Instead, it felt a bit flat and rushed.
THE DESCENT Pre-Installed:
Surely, there must be a better system than this to reveal the big ending that I spent three hours building up to? I know there are achievements attached to finding these notes, but I’d much rather uncover the story in order than search around for notes, and I think the game would benefit from steering the player towards the notes in the correct order, as it was quite an enjoyable and intriguing story. With a note system comes the realization that the story is going to be brief, and it was, but the writing was well done and successfully added layers to the story and felt interesting and worthwhile. The graphical quality of the game is indie standard and some of the happenings looked a little odd, especially any moving entities, but on the whole the game managed to create some tension and trepidation with eerie noises and weird events, and although I was never really scared at any point, I did enjoy the atmosphere of the game.
