Wéko The Mask Gatherer Direct Play:
Today’s release is special in more ways than one. Wéko is the first game I’ve tested for months ahead of its release, offering feedback and reporting bugs to make the game better. It has also become one of my favourite games on Steam. It draws a fine line of offering old school gameplay with modern sensibilities. The game is mainly inspired by the older 3D Zelda games with a tiny bit of Souls like sprinkled here and there. With Zelda, you can think of themes such as the usage of masks (not spoiling the rest), certain gadgets like bombs, the gameplay structure but with less focus on puzzles (there are still some though), the charming world with different races etc. The game is not trying to be difficult like Souls games but it borrows the stamina management, the focus on animation, the charges of health potion and being able to replenish it at a save point. I guess there is a bit of Metroidvania in it too in the sense that you won’t get to some items or sections until you have certain gadgets.
