This game is not a classic Japanese horror game where you can’t fight back against the ghosts. In Kinki Spiritual Affairs Bureau, you’re just as much of a threat as the spirits themselves! Content Description: Fight, gun shooting and stealth action. The story takes place in Japan, where exorcisms are carried out by government agents. The protagonist is Mizuki Shiraishi, who is an exorcist from the Kinki Spiritual Affairs Bureau. Shiraishi visits Saiga Village in Nara to investigate a mystery in which all trances of the village have been wiped off the internet. Upon her arrival, she discovers all villagers have gone missing and the village is infested with a disproportionate number of unlawful spirits. Electricity, communications, and the internet in the village have been all cut-off, and Shiraishi also finds out that someone is pulling the strings behind the incident. Shiraishi pursues the mystery with radio assistance from her boss Kohinata and her junior co-worker Maruoka. First of all, this game is not good. It is very much a jank, poorly optimized, baby’s first Unity project made mostly with store assets and there is basically zero redeeming quality with its gameplay. However, I am still giving it a wholehearted recommendation solely for its writing. The story starts off as a “twist” on the usual Japanese horror genre with a gag-filled Call of Duty parody plot. But as the game goes on, it eventually grows to become a proper satire expanding its settings while keeping a comedic tone. The characters are memorable with reasonable motivations for all the little screen time they had.

The story has managed to keep me hooked to endure the rest of the game and it even managed to land of its feet without major plot holes to a decent conclusion. The optimization is bad (closing the game crashed my pc during my vtubing stream), the stupidly low FOV causing motion sickness and the ridiculous motion blur, weird camera and camera control choices. All fundamentals to a shooting game. Simple but fatal mistakes that demerits the actual gold hidden inside the game. Great story, intriguing world building, beautiful motion capture, the ability to sell the story even without the facial animations. All the complex parts that makes a game great. If it played well it would be a masterpiece worthy of any indie gamers.
