Heroes of Hammerwatch II Steam Pre-Installed
This is straight up bait and switch. It is a half-baked, early access game. Have you ever watched a boring movie, and waited the entire movie for the “twist”, only for it to never come? That’s this game. Though I have 20+ hours, I would say I actually saw all of the content of this game after about 4 hours. I kept playing after that expecting there to be significantly more content to come with the grind. There was not. You see all of the same trinkets every time. You see the same bosses each time, you see the same levels in mostly the same formation each time. Every run is exactly the same. The balance feels arbitrary and pointless, with most choices just subpar and pointless.
I have no proof, but there is no doubt in my mind these developers had significantly more planned, but decided to throw their hands up and give up. I have early-access filtered from my store for a reason. I will never buy a product from them again. This is a masterpiece. I usually don’t play rogue* games beyond the first hour, but I can’t stop playing this. The early progression was solid enough to keep me hooked that crucial first few hours. Between each run, I switch to a new character – usually one that I found good gear for in the previous run, or just the lowest-level one. The game mechanics are superbly designed to encourage this. You get a passive bonus to some stat for the highest level character of each class you have. So if I play a round with my warrior, my other characters will have higher HP in my next run.

Unlike most hack n slash games, where you play with one chracter and mostly one build for 30 hours, here you can switch between 7 classes, each with multiple weapon sets with attached skills, and at level 10 you specialize to get a third active + passive skill. You can change the specialization between runs for no cost, so if you find a great weapon that goes better with another specialization, you can just switch that, and respec the invested skill/stat points for a _reasonable_ cost! Now combine this awesome character system with the roguelike chance encounters, every playthrough IS truly different. Even _I_ am saying that. I never say that about any roguelikes. I do have some feedback for the devs, but these are minor things: – in the beginning, the difficulty levels between different classes were very different for me. I think you’re supposed to start with the paladin, as that class is way easier than the others as you can self-heal.
