“It was a human.” is a short SF psychedelic interrogation adventure game that focuses on the interrogation of a suspect in a dismemberment murder case. The game’s setting begins with a murder that occurred in a hotel in Kase City, Saga Prefecture. When the police arrived, they discovered the bodies of two unidentified men. The cause of death for each was presumed to be traumatic shock due to blunt force trauma and asphyxiation, respectively. Also, at the scene, a woman suspected to be the perpetrator, Okoze Isana, was found standing with a coping saw in hand. The investigation team considers her to be the murderer in the dismemberment case. The protagonist of this game is a lieutenant colonel in the military, tasked with interrogating the suspect, Okoze Isana. The protagonist needs to find out why she killed the two men and how she committed the crime. Okoze Isana might use sweet words or flirtatious glances towards the protagonist during the interrogation, but she is considered a villain and virtually a criminal. The condemnation of her is the objective of this game.
This game offers a captivating and unique experience with its distinctive atmosphere and psychological depth. The use of AI-generated artwork, while unconventional, is well-integrated and visually consistent, contributing to the game’s eerie and immersive horror theme. The narrative engages players with complex moral and philosophical questions, keeping you engrossed until the very end. There is a thin line between being psychedelic and edgy. It was a human is sometimes crossing this border. There is definitely some good writing, world building and great images. I also liked main characters, general atmosphere and some philosophical takes on what does it mean to be a human being. On the other hand… there are some cheesy fragments accompanied by poorly generated AI images. It took me 2 hours to experience most of the game, and I think it justifies the price tag. If you like strange, short visual novels, you might give it a try. Just be aware that It was a human isn’t a criminal game.

Gonna preface this with one of my bigger complaints about this game; it makes heavy use of AI generated art. most of it feels superfluous, as if it never needed to be there. some of it looks really good (e.g. the victims’ bodies), but the fact that it is just AI generated with barely any human input really detracts from the artistic value it has to me. this game’s story itself is pretty neat. i think it dawdles on kinda meaningless dives into the main character’s philosophy when you can already kinda gather her views and perspective from the way she acts. the game tells you there is no “right answer” to the final sequence of questions. do not believe it, or you might think the game’s bad endings are the true ending. last point, the game makes attempts at being a horror game at times. it’ll flash random “realistic” ai-generated photos on screen to freak you out.
