About The Game
Based on The Lord of the Rings motion picture trilogy, LEGO® The Lord of the Rings follows the original story-lines of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, taking players through the epic story events re-imagined with the humor and endless variety of LEGO play. Trusted with the dangerous task to destroy an ancient magical ring that threatens all that is good, Frodo is forced to leave his peaceful home. But the ring wants to be found and the road to Mount Doom, the only place where it can be destroyed, will be perilous and riddled with Orcs and fouler things. To help Frodo, a Fellowship is formed —Aragorn the Ranger, Gandalf the Wizard, Legolas the Elf, Gimli the Dwarf, Boromir a Man of Gondor, and Frodo’s Hobbit friends Sam, Merry and Pippin. Players relive the legend through the LEGO mini-figures, as they explore wonders, solve timeless riddles, and overcome endless foes in their quest to destroy the Ring. Explore all of the open-world of Middle-earth and experience epic battles with Orcs, Uruk-hai, the Balrog, the Witch-king, and other fearsome creatures. Wield the power of the Palantír or Seeing-stone (‘one that looks far-away’), and jump between multiple story-lines. Experience the LEGO The Lord of the Rings heroes come to life in an all new way with the mini-fig characters delivering the dialogue from the films. Collect, combine and forge new items in the Blacksmith Shop using Mithril, the most precious metal in Middle-earth. Discover and unlock over more than 80 playable characters, including Frodo, Aragorn, Gandalf, and many others. Collect and use a variety of weaponry and magical items, including the Light of Earendil, Elven rope, swords, and bows. Play with family and friends with easy access drop-in, drop-out game play option.
Very fun game and definitely enjoyed the time spent on grinding to 100% completion, despite many, many bugs and glitches. The open world gameplay is great and somewhat refreshing to have, definitely better than playing the same level for 5 times in order to beat the clock or take a look at beta level. The bonus level is probably the best bonus level among other LEGO games, because for the encore that’s exactly what everyone wants – smash stuff and enjoy yourself. The map works great, though the markers tick themselves off when you accidentally start a fight with an enemy character, so it disorientates itself. Another bittersweet moment is character selection in both open world and free play – an amazing concept, but yet, super annoying when it switches the other character just because the game thinks that there should be only one tall character or one small. Saving the game on a certain level area? GIGA BRAIN IDEA, saved so much time on levels where you had to run and try to collect chest minikits. At this point, having played multiple LEGO games, I think it’s a tradition for this type of games to have bugs, and it’s certainly annoying, but not rage-enducing. However, I’m going to point out the flaws no treasure detector is a missed opportunity, and an essential extra to have; Legolas-oriented jumps in open world are going to give me PTSD; so many secret rooms made me replay level million times and I could barely see them; the shooting is a bit awkward, but I guess it’s not so easy to program projectiles and time their travel distance; not a huge fan of original movie voice over, still done great with slips of silent lego humor, but it’s always better without it.
This was the first LEGO game I have really played, and I’m so glad I did. I liked the movies well enough and enjoy games in fantasy settings in general, so figured it was a good place to start. All it took was wandering around the Shire and listening to the music to fall in love. Somehow it just managed to capture a little bit of magic that instantly endeared me to the game. I played through the entire story mode quickly and just left the game installed for a couple of years, always intending to go back to 100% it but never really getting around to it. After reading the books and falling in love with the series completely, I decided to revisit the LEGO game and see if it stood the test of time. While many games that I call my “favorites” over the years do not, this one actually got even better. Going back and finding all the little hidden nooks and crannies in the world, both overworld and within the freeplay story scenes, was a complete joy. I still haven’t managed to collect them all – a part of me almost doesn’t want to, because then I’d feel like I couldn’t really justify playing it more – and it’s still just so much fun and constantly surprising in a good way. Even if you only sorta like Lord of the Rings, this is completely worth it. I see it go on sale for like $5.00 all the time and at that price, you really can’t go wrong with this.
