The industrialization of China in the 80’s is one of the most consequential events in human history. Through economic reforms, the China of today is a geopolitical powerhouse and rival to the world order imposed by the United States. In China Mao’s Legacy, you can experience for yourself the steps that China took to create its modern economy. No other game provides such a focus on the internal and external policies of China in the 80’s. I particularly enjoy learning about the obscure historical events that I experience on my playthroughs of the game. However, read some of the negative reviews, and you may notice a theme in them: the game is confusing and opaque. There is no in-game explanation for what the variables do and the consequences of your choices in the decisions are not shown until after you have already chosen. This is partly due to the design philosophy of Kremlin Games. In the real world, policymakers and politicians only know the consequences of their actions only after they have happened and there is no guide to successfully playing the game of politics.

The way that this game impresses me is that it provides a god-view that depicts my parents’ early childhood and grandparents’ early thirties. While they have recalled their heartbreaking lives and fading faith in 1976–a year of grief news and natural disaster–at dinner tables occasionally, this game reveals the scheme behind that pivotal year and pushes the player in the position to decide the nation’s future: Shall we reform? If yes, how we shall reform? To what extent shall we reform–from cautiously putting the market economy into a bird cage, to betraying the beloved helmsman or even the diciplines that weaponized our minds for the past thirty years, the choice is yours. Probably the only game ever made on this subject with this much detail, and probably the only one that will ever be made. I love that it shows that China would not have survived without Deng’s reforms but also why Deng did not liberalize like Gorbachev did.
