This is a tower defense game in that you can map out the enemy’s path any way you want on a matrix grid. The strategic challenge is that you can recombine towers to create more powerful ones, and depending on how you combine them, the same towers can develop radically different abilities. Game is very hard starting at wave 50. I suspect they will tone it down a bit, but it is definitely “hard-core” for a tower defense with plenty of variety in strategy, though I am not sure how many are viable as the difficulty scales. Tons of customization (can combine turrets to make stronger turrets with randomized stat boosts/abilities and can combine those stronger turrets with other stronger turrets to take on their special skill, etc. Lots to unpack and learn as you go.

When building, you choose 1 of 3 random towers, each attached to 3 track segments in familiar “tetris” shapes. The random pool can be improved by investing, and you have recipes to “refactor” 3 towers together into a stronger one. This means each build, you’re picking based on tower type, tower level, the track shape, what tower fusions are available right now, among other things. Plus the expected TD gameplay of looking at the upcoming wave and considering if your defense can hold it, or whether you can afford to save instead. This is all introduced to you piece-by-piece through the difficulty levels, giving a very effective tutorial where you’re always playing around with something new. Refactored” turrets have a passive based on which three tower types were used. You can stack up to 3 (*or 4) of these passives on a single tower, if you like, allowing for miniature roguelite “builds” across your defense. This adds even further to the strategic decision-making.

None of this is overwhelming, however. Placing towers is simple, since the only restriction is one tower per square. While you have to have a valid path at all times, you can buy individual path squares whenever you like, to bridge little gaps. If you haven’t played much TD, don’t bother. You’ll be overwhelmed and confused. But if you found this game because you’ve been struggling to find a TD that has all the interesting gameplay mechanics you need, do not pass on this. The game will probably launch in chinese, and you’ll have to fumble about to switch to english. Once you do, the translation is passable (although there are a few non-essential UI elements that are still chinese). Overall, the user interface is kinda bad. The graphics are nothing to write about. There is no lore. But the gameplay is exactly what I’ve been searching for. Every tower you build exponentially increases the cost of future towers – but every level you beat exponentially decreases their cost. This means you’ll tend to get about +1 tower per level. The longer you wait to build the towers, the more money you save.
