Space Tail is a 2.5D adventure platformer, which immerses the player in a deep, emotional plot, and lets him explore new planets and interact with alien civilizations. Every journey changes the point of view – it grows with the traveller. Our game tells a story about self-exploration, transformation and understanding the world around us. The plot of the game is inspired by real events, when people began their conquest of space by sending animals to the stars. We intended it to be a kind of a tribute to all the animals that paved the way for humans to go into space. Most of these animals – the first astronauts, did not survive the journey. Our story tells of the adventures of a dog named Bea, who… managed to beat the odds. Bea is a cheerful and courageous character, but the player must remember that she is just a… dog. She has all the characteristics of a mongrel – she barks, likes to chase her own tail, and learns about the world through her senses. Bea can sniff, listen and observe. These are the main mechanics of detective mode which will help her in exploring and understanding her environment.
Bea travels through space discovering more planets. Each planet is different and has its specific inhabitants, who can either become friends of the main character or be very unfriendly towards her. We are convinced that exploring this amazing world together with Bea will give the player a lot of satisfaction and pleasure. You start the game by going through some training where you’re taught the different skills you have, since this is a 2.5D Action Platformer as you can imagine you can run and jump, but you can also use your enhanced dog senses to solve different situations or puzzles, such as your sight to see the connections of devices, or your smell to follow tracks and avoid hazards like burning ventilations.
After the training, you start your space exploration and end up in the first planet, this is where I began noticing more clearly the very detailed graphics and atmosphere, there’s a lot going on that really reminds me of the Ori franchise, and that’s of course a good thing. After you advance further you get to meet some native animals, where you can start making use of a different mechanic that allows you to communicate with them. It basically sums up to you doing an action like growling which leads them to feel a certain way about you, different animals react differently to your actions, and depending on what feeling you provoke you can cause them to for example attack you or help you out. I like the concept here but didn’t love the execution.

I think Space Tail has a lot of good things going for it. A unique story, pretty good controls and awesome graphics. But I felt it throws too many mechanics your way right away instead of fleshing them out slowly, plus the animal interaction side of things isn’t very fun in my opinion. But even with that in mind I think it’s a good game, and I hope they can improve upon it in the future. I have a great fun playing that game. If you like games like ORI you should not be dissapointed. Its a puzzle platformer so also for people who loves solving puzzles. The game has quite unique mechanics. You will need to use dog senses and interact with other creatures to make them friendly and help you in the game.
