The gameplay and tone of the stories are as varied as the Finches themselves. The only constants are that each is played from a first-person perspective and that each story ends with that family member’s death. Ultimately, it’s a game about what it feels like to be humbled and astonished by the vast and unknowable world around us. What Remains of Edith Finch is a short, narrative-driven game that tells the story of the Finches, a family who became famous because of their long history of bad luck. Edith Finch, the last living descendant, returns to the family home to learn the truth about the alleged curse and the secrets her mother kept hidden until her death. As Edith explores the sprawling house, she discovers the past of her relatives told in short fragments, each chronicling their unique experiences and tragic fates. Through these stories, Edith begins to unravel the mystery of her family’s curse and comes to understand the true meaning of their legacy; however, the game’s true significance lies solely in the hands of the player. The game features 13 short stories, each centered on a family member’s final moments among the living. The narrative is told in chronological order, beginning with the eldest documented family member and progressing to our heroine.

In terms of substance, all of these “episodes” are very different from one another: one moment you’re in a comic strip about your greatest fear, and the next you’re a cat risking its life to catch prey for dinner. Despite its length, each narrative brilliantly reflects the family member’s personality, character, and, most importantly, the hardships they experienced in life. The majority of players would argue that the tone is utterly dismal, with little place for joy, but I believe What Remains Of Edith Finch is primarily a story about letting go of the past and breaking free from the burdens accumulated over generations of suffering, which in itself holds a positive value. This story is unlike anything I’ve ever seen; it tells a powerful and emotional story about life’s difficulties while also offering a ray of hope for a brighter future.
