Death Stranding’s gameplay is unlike any other game I’ve played before and on paper it shouldn’t work as well as it does. Combat is a very small part of the game and feels like an afterthought. Instead the bulk of the game is spent ferrying supplies from place to place. Where this gets interesting is how many sim-like elements the developers included. You spend a large portion of the game travelling entirely on foot carrying each parcel on your back. Parcels weigh the player down realistically and will affect how well you can move when walking up a hill or crossing a river. It makes normally mundane hazards in any other video game like an ordinary hill feel like an obstacle that must be overcome. It makes the game feel like a science fiction hiking simulator, or a simulator for a job that doesn’t exist. The player character feels very fragile and he realistically needs to shower, rest and catch his breath. I thoroughly enjoyed it’s slow paced immersive gameplay a lot and found myself coming back to it over and over even after completing its story.
